Justice for Washington is proud to announce the Future of Freedom Conference on January 9, 2010 at Seattle University School of Law. To protect the Washington State Constitution, we must ensure that our state bar and judiciary are well-educated and well-versed on the history of the constitution, issues regarding judicial selection, and the ethics surrounding the process of running for judge.

The 2009 Future of Freedom Conference marks the 120th anniversary of the ratification of the Washington State Constitution. The conference will feature presentations from leading constitutional scholar and attorney Hugh Spitzer and state Supreme Court Justice James M. Johnson. Spitzer will present a history of the constitutional convention, and Justice Johnson will discuss the state constitution's protections for civil rights and their relative strength compared to the federal constitution.

This year’s keynote address will be by Chief Justice Gerry Alexander and will include recognition of the Chief Justice’s service to the people of Washington State from US Senator Slade Gorton and others.

The event will close with two presentations on Canon 7 of the Code of Judicial Conduct – providing useful advice to potential judicial candidates and helping both attorneys and members of the public understand the unique limits placed on candidates for the courts.
